Chehong Pavilion


 


Chehong Pavilion is a unique building between pavilion, house and terrace. This is where the host invites guests to rest. 

Dongguan is the hometown of litchi, a kind of fruit of Lingnan, Su Dongpo has a poem said: "Three hundred litchi a day, better to be a Lingnan people." After the owner of Keyuan, Zhang Jingxiu, built the garden, he invited scholars to be guests in Keyuan. When litchi is ripe in the summer, the host and friends often enjoy the scenery, poetry and painting, and taste the newly picked litchi. Famous Lingnan scholars such as Zheng Xianfu, Chen Liangyu, Jian Shiliang, Luo Tieyu, Ju Chao and Ju Lian are all regular visitors of Keyuan. 

"Che" means "break", "red" is a metonymy of lychee. In those days, high-quality lychee trees were planted, and Ju Chao has a poem said: "Living in this delicate garden in the summer, waiting for the lychee trees to mature, singing while picking fresh lychees, with them to fill my stomach."
